Tied with Blood and Expectations

Discrimination in race, religion and appearance still lives to this day. Judgemental remarks remain inevitable. Nadya, 19, is a Dutch-Malay mixed blood and born a Muslim. She has been met with shrewd remarks due to her differences that show in her features and is often mistaken as an ‘outsider’. The first portrait displays the expectant wear and manner of before entering the mosque and that of a Muslim woman. The second portrait is a recreation of the first shot, however in the subject’s daily appearance. I wish to show visually the opposing perspectives applied to individuals like Nadya, that has been made by the society itself.
