Image + Body

Image + Body engages with NAFA Fine Art alumni and current students in a synergy of photography and performance art practices. With a focus on the exploration of body and image as a form of gestural mark-making, the project invites female artists to showcase the diverse trajectories in their practice, in a series of intimate encounters through collaboration in response to each artist’s works.

The project ultimately pays homage to the distinct and significant female voices, which include pioneer Georgette Chen and prolific sculptor Han Sai Por, that have emerged from NAFA’s rich history.

In this one-night exhibition and performance, the artists will take as point of departure – the body as a medium, context and tool for communication, encouraging the culturally discursive and increasingly inventive ways to engage the body in practice. They will expand upon the notion of image making in our current image-saturated hyper-universe, to seek a reconciliation of self, body and
being.

GRAIN
Installation, Sound
2018

GRAIN (2018) reminisces the vital value of rice in the majority of Asian culture through the communication of touch and sound with the human's body. This piece emphasises on the artist's spontaneous reaction when in physical contact with rice as a subject to create an emotional bond beyond its conventional function.

For this work, I’ve set up a ‘safe space’ using 10kg worth of rice grains. The formation for this installation is accompanied by 3 glass bowls that I’ve used whilst the production of the sound audio. The sound source is hidden for this installation. I want the artists or audience to be able to immerse themselves with the sound of something delicate like the rice grains.

This is the aftermath of the night of performance and audience interaction. Other artist’s materials can be seen in installation work.
